Have you ever drove up to a home and it looked like something was missing? It seemed bland somehow but you couldn't put your finger on it? Was it perhaps missing a tree or two? I don't know about you but I have drove up to a house and thought wow this looks like an empty lot, the house doesn't even get your attention. If this describes your home not to worry the first step is admitting you have a problem. The solution, get yourself some trees.
If you don't have a tree in mind you can do research on the internet and save yourself some leg work. When you have narrowed down your choices, you may want to visit the local nurseries and see that tree in person. Driving around town and the surrounding areas is also a great way to view trees native to your area. This is important you need a tree that will grow in your zone otherwise it could die and trees aren't cheap.
You can buy your trees in different stages of life from saplings or have a full grown tree transplanted right in front of your home. If your budget is an issue you may need to start with a younger tree. Here's a tip if you see a neighbor re-landscaping their front yard ask about the trees they may be paying the contractor to rip it out. It's possible that you could great a nice tree for less, of course you would have to weigh the cost of transplanting but it might be worth it.
Gosh there are still more choices do you want a fast growing or slow growing tree? Depending on your space a combination of both could be what's right for you. Especially if it is new construction, you want some green as soon as possible.
Another decision you must factor in is leaves on or leaves off in winter. If you don't want to spend time raking and mulching leaves plant a tree that doesn't lose its leaves in winter. Evergreens are good choice for folks that want less yard work. If you enjoy rooting around in the yard by all means purchase a "deciduous" tree and have a it raking leaves burns calories.
However many towns will not let you rake your leaves to the curb anymore for community mulching so take that into consideration you may have to pay per bag for disposal.
Trees make your home look more inviting and give it a softer and completed look. A beautiful tree placed just in the right spot can add value to your home when you get ready to sell, besides being the envy of the neighborhood. So if you are treeless grab a shovel and plant a tree today!
